Ao Yon Beach Phuket, also known as Ao Yon Yai (big Ao Yon Beach) is just south of Phuket Town on the end of an irregular-shaped cape on the Southeast side of Phuket Island.

Ao Yon Beach is not the most beautiful spot in Phuket, but it’s somewhere scenic to go if you’re in town and craving the beach and don’t want to go for a drive. Ao Yon Beach is not all that clean during the monsoon season. Ao Yon Beach faces southeast and offers great sea views and a direct line to Koh Mai Thon Island to the southeast.

The large section of beach is great for taking a walk, or for a picnic at lunchtime. The water at Ao Yon Beach isn’t so special, there are waste-water runoff pipes leading into the bay and the smell of sewage can be off-putting. During low tide, the beach becomes a large mud bog, too soft to walk in and find shells. The water here is usually quite flat and kayaks are available to rent in at least one spot.

There are a multitude of boats in the bay, some of which are due to visitors at the Phuket Yacht Club. The atmosphere at Ao Yon is very laid back and you won’t find so many people wandering about. You will find some people in the restaurants and bars on the beach.

Restaurant prices are moderate to high – and that should be expected being so close to Phuket Town. This is where a lot of people working in town come for a lunch or dinner break and to enjoy the chill vibes and the ocean views.

Beach Restaurants / Bars Ao Yon Beach

Flamingo (Beachfront Cafe & Bar & Co-Working)
The great atmosphere here with a location right on the beach and ready for sundowners as the sun sets, the Flamingo Cafe and Bar is a great place for spending some downtime in a great location.

Guests were happy with the drinks, service, location, and atmosphere with only a few complaining about various food items or the speed of preparation. The food reviews were from months and years ago, so things may have changed. It’s worth it for the drinks and atmosphere alone.

Hill House Restaurant
On the Northeast side of Ao Yon Beach and set back from the beach about 50 meters is the Hill House Restaurant. This one gets good reviews for food and service, and is just a short walk from the beach. They have an extensive menu with lots of fried seafood items, french fries, som tam and other Thai specialties, curries, soups, baked fish, and pasta.

Their dining area is on the second floor and offers expansive views of Ao Yon Beach.

Ao Yon Beach Accommodations

Villa Baan Amandeha

Luxury villas on Ao Yon Beach start at 12,500 THB per night. Excellent reviews, and they have another property in France. Ultra-modern, chic property with style and elegance. Some reviewers complained about some aspects of their stay, but overall most were happy with their choice of accommodations.

Bandara Villas

Bandara Villas are located up on the hill overlooking Ao Yon Beach. These well-appointed villas get good reviews for the views, the rooms, and the activities available during the day (both paid and free). Many reviewers commented on the food being the weak point of their stay. Private pools with each villa – starting around 15,000 THB per night in the low-season.
